The Phoenix Suns are set to honor the legacy of Al McCoy, the legendary radio play-by-play announcer and a cherished member of their Ring of Honor, with a special tribute during the upcoming 2024-25 season. Following McCoy’s peaceful passing on September 21 at the age of 91, the team will wear a jersey band throughout the season featuring a black band along the left shoulder with “AL” inscribed in white.
Mat Ishbia, owner of the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury, emphasized McCoy’s profound impact on the organization, city, and fans, stating, “Al McCoy’s voice represented the best of the Phoenix Suns organization for over five decades.” The jersey band will serve as a constant reminder of his enduring legacy each time the team takes the court.
McCoy, known as the “dean of NBA broadcasters,” had an illustrious career spanning 51 seasons, starting his tenure as “The Voice of the Suns” on September 27, 1972, and concluding on May 11, 2023. His distinctive voice, vivid play-by-play descriptions, and deep knowledge of the game made him a beloved figure in sports broadcasting.
His contributions to basketball were recognized with several accolades, including the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007. He was the first play-by-play announcer inducted into the Arizona Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2004 and joined the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. McCoy was also honored by the Suns as the 15th inductee into their Ring of Honor in 2017, solidifying his legacy within the franchise.
This tribute reflects the Suns’ commitment to honoring McCoy’s significant role in shaping the team’s history and connection with its fans.
