Muni Long Reflects on Writing Fifth Harmony’s ‘Worth It’ and Its Surprising Journey to Success

Karla Sofía Gascón attends the 2025 Netflix Oscar after party at Chateau Marmont on March 02, 2025 in Los Angeles, California.

March marks 10 years since Fifth Harmony released their hit song Worth It—a track co-written by two-time Grammy winner Muni Long.

While discussing her new single Slow Grind, Long, 36, shared with PEOPLE the unexpected way she found out about Worth It‘s release and how it came to be.

The Unexpected Creation of Worth It

When asked if she wrote the song with Fifth Harmony in mind, Long revealed, “No, I wrote that song in the studio by myself.” She explained that production duo Stargate later reworked it by combining different elements from multiple songs.

“They took the hook from one song I wrote, a verse from another, and the Kid Ink verse from a track he had done with them,” Long explained. “They basically engineered this song—it was like three different songs put together.”

Fifth Harmony released Worth It on March 2, 2015. By the time Long found out, it had already climbed the iTunes charts.

“I got a text saying, ‘Congratulations!’ and I was like, ‘For what?’” she recalled with a laugh. The song went on to peak at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has since amassed over 2.3 billion views on YouTube.

Looking Back, Moving Forward

Credited under her birth name, Priscilla Renea, Long has since reinvented herself as an artist. She won her first Grammy in 2023 for Hrs & Hrs and recently took home another for Made for Me (Live on BET) in 2025.

After this year’s win, Long made it clear in her acceptance speech: “Please stop calling me Priscilla—it’s Muni Long now.”

As she continues to evolve in her career, she will make her debut Coachella performance this April. Reflecting on Worth It, she acknowledges the surprises that come with the music industry.

“I’m not complaining! It is what it is,” Long said. “Things like this happen even to the best of us. If it happened to me, it can happen to you too, sweetie.”
