The shooter was later charged with two counts of first-degree murder with a firearm and six counts of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, Fox affiliate WOFL-TV reported. According to officers, shots rang out in downtown Orlando on Halloween night around 1 am. It was also reported by ABC News that the six victims were taken to the hospital and ranged in age from 19 to 39. According to WOFL, they are in stable condition.
Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith held a press conference almost immediately after the shooter had been apprehended. Smith stated that none of the officers present had fired their weapon at Edgar and that they were still investigating the case as a motive was not yet clear.
“He pretty much walked into downtown, walked into the street and did what he did,” Smith said during the conference adding that Edgar had been previously arrested in 2023 for grand theft. Smith did not release the names of the victims saying that they would remain unidentified until the families had been notified.
It was reported that the two victims had been killed in two separate areas after Edgar had opened fire. One victim was discovered near the intersection of Central Boulevard and Orange Avenue while the second person was near the intersection of Washington Street and Orange Avenue.
Smith stated that a 26-year-old Hispanic female was also sent to the hospital after she was trampled by the crowds who were trying to get as far away from the commotion as possible. It was reported that Orlando officials had stationed about 100 officers downtown during the festivities in order to mitigate any chance of violence.
NBC 6 South Florida reported that crowds of at least 50,000 to 100,000 had flooded the streets to celebrate the holiday. “In light of this tragic incident, the Orlando Police Department would like to remind the community that safety is our top priority,” a post made by the department reads. “The Orlando Police Department is also assessing the need for increased patrols Downtown this weekend.”
